Forrest Wallingford (BA in Art, senior, photography; double major BA in International Studies) recently accepted a position with Amplifier Magazine as a photographer and digital illustrator. Amplifier Magazine promotes underground culture on artists, musicians, businesses, and other talent across North Carolina, and it will be expanding its coverage nationally this year.
Mary "Amelia" Pate (BA in Art, sculpture, senior) will attend the workshop Weaving: All the Elements at the Penland School of Crafts this summer. In this workshop she will make eight-shaft weavings that combine materials, colors, and finishing treatments. Pate will experiment with woven structures using manufactured and naturally occurring fibers. The workshop will begin with weaving theory, special techniques, surface treatments, and an introduction to the design process. Students will then develop their own ideas and make personal designs and projects. Pate was awarded a Windgate Partial Scholarship for this workshop, which fully covers the cost of tuition.
Spencer Crews (Post-Baccalaureate in Art with K-12 Teacher Licensure, sculpture) entered UNC Asheville in Spring 2016 with a BA in Art (sculpture) from Brevard College to pursue teacher licensure. Crews won the Chancellor's Purchase Award at the 49th Annual Juried Student Exhibition. The award piece is titled #9 and is made of cherry wood, metal, and cement. Previously, she had been awarded a Best in Show at a Juried Student Art Show while a student at Brevard.
Shanna Glawson Blake (BFA in Art, sculpture, senior) received a scholarship to attend Judy Fox’s Sculpture Master Class Workshop at the New York Academy of Art in March. The Master Class program invites professional artists to the Academy to teach workshops that are condensed versions of an apprenticeship. Working closely with these artists, students gain insight into the artist’s process and the critique process.
