Tucker Cooke Gallery and 2nd Floor Gallery, Owen Hall, 30th Annual NCUR Conference. Eight UNC Asheville studio Art and four Art History students will be a part of approximately 3,700 student scholars participating in NCUR 30, April 7-9, 2016. The students hail from 900 colleges, universities and associations that are part of the Council on Undergraduate Research. This 30th renewal of NCUR will mark the fifth time UNC Asheville has hosted the national conference, which has grown tenfold in size since its founding.  Opening Reception, Thursday, April 7, 6:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m.

March 18–April 1, 2016, “Art is a Human Right for Everybodyis the culmination of Hannah Wiepke’s yearlong internship experience at Open Hearts Art Center coupled with undergraduate research on curatorial best practices. Her project, a curated public exhibition and website, challenges the pervasive medical model that frames disability and furthers a meaningful examination of artwork created by the OHAC community through narratives gleaned from artists’ interviews and audience feedback. This project is sponsored by Curatoria, an interdisciplinary collective of UNC Asheville students, faculty, and other scholars dedicated to cultivating and supporting innovative approaches to displaying and interpreting visual culture.(Opening Reception: March 18, 2016, 5:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.)

Under The Sink, February 19–March 11, 2016, Second Floor Gallery Owen Hall. Private Domain, February 17–March 4, 2016, S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, Owen Hall. Private Domain is a solo exhibition of recent work by retired UNC Asheville painting and drawing professor, Virginia Derryberry. Visiting Artist Lecture: John Rudel (Class of 1998, professor of art at Virginia Wesleyan University) will speak about Virginia Derryberry in conjunction with her solo exhibition, 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m., also in S. Drawing Discourse: 7th Annual International Exhibition of Contemporary Drawing.  January 15–February 12, 2016,, S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, Owen Hall. As part of an ongoing commitment to promote drawing practices in the visual arts, UNC Asheville invited artists to examine drawing as it is practiced and defined by today’s artists. Such an exhibition will demonstrate the continued significance of drawing through both conventional and innovative methods. (Artist Lecture and Reception, January 15, 2016).

Simultaneity 2016. January 22–February 12, 2016. The work shown in Richmond in October by UNC Asheville students as part of the VCU and UNC Asheville art students' exchange of art work, will be on campus for us to admire in the Second Floor Gallery, Owen Hall. Art/Mechatronics Collaborative Exhibition, November 23–January 15, 2016, Second Floor Gallery, Owen Hall.  Opening Reception: Friday, December 4, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Organized by UNC Asheville Professors Rebecca Bruce, Jackson Martin, Susan Reiser and Brent Skidmore. The exhibition documents a collaborative project between courses, CSCI 173: Creative Fabrication, ART 346/347/446: Sculpture II/III/IV and ART 374: Contemporary Sculpture Methods. Read more

Fall 2015

August 21-September 17, S. Tucker Cooke Gallery.  Carol Prusa: Unfathomable. Visual artist working in silverpoint drawing on ceramic domes, fiber optics, and other media installations

August 12–September 5, 2015. Second Floor Gallery. Tatiana Potts: Topophilia. UNC Asheville alumna and currently a MFA Candidate and Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, exhibited a series of prints that incorporates lithographic, silkscreen, and engraving techniques. She has collated one set into a hand-bound book in a method reminiscent of manuscripts of earlier days of printmaking. (Topophilia is Greek for "love of place.")

September 10–October 2, 2015, Second Floor Gallery. Study Abroad Photography Exhibition featuring winners from the 2014 International Photo Contest, which is open to university students, faculty, and staff. 

September 24–October 30, 2015, S. Tucker Cooke Gallery.  With a Mighty Hand: Torah Paintings + Abstraction from Daniel Nevins, an exhibition of visiting artist Daniel Nevins' recent  abstract work and narrative illustrations of a Torah for children, A Mighty Hand.

October 16–November 3, 2015, Highsmith Art and Intercultural Gallery.  Art Front Members Exhibition is an annual exhibition of selected pieces in various media submitted by members of the Department of Art and Art History student art group.

October 16–November 11, 2015, Second Floor Gallery, Owen Hall. Simultaneity: Shared Spaces - VCU Student Art ExchangeOrganized by UNC Asheville Professor Virginia Derryberry and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Professor Reni Gower, selected student work will be exhibited at the partnering university. Eva Bares' Art History students at UNC Asheville will be writing a catalogue essay about the included work from both universities involved in the collaboration.

November 3 –November 17, 2015, S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, Owen Hall.  Looking At Appalachia.  Looking At Appalachia is a national traveling group photography exhibition that includes 75 photographs from 51 individuals ranging from amateur to professional photographers from a 420 county area stretching from southern New York to northeast Mississippi.  The exhibition has garnered many accolades from publications including The New York Times and National Geographic. November 6–November 17, 2015, Highsmith Art and Intercultural Gallery, Highsmith Student Union.  Jacob Wilson, BFA Exhibition in Ceramics, Consumed? Instigating a Healthy Future Through Sculptural Reflections.  Through sculptural ceramics and applied mixed media it is possible to create works that facilitate the questioning of modern culture.

November 20–December 1, 2015. Highsmith Art and Intercultural Gallery. Marisa Mahathey, BFA Senior Exhibition (ceramics). Experiencing the Connection: A Ceramic Exploration of One.Through the crafting of ceramic jars, Marisa brings attention to the importance of unity and the connectedness of all things. Heavily inspired by Middle Eastern aesthetic and Mehndi designs, she create pieces that reference these influences in order to culminate a pattern and style for these pieces. 

December 4–December 15, S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, Owen Hall. Christine Cox, BFA Senior Exhibition (ceramics). Reclamation of Self Through Form: Making the Internal External depicts Christine "path towards truth, acceptance, and enlightenment. The abstractions of the sculpted female shell represent an interpretation of the soul or the mind, which tends to be more complex and mysterious. A psychological metamorphosis is shown in the destructive manipulation of the clay body, which leaves a space for new growth. . . ."

December 4–December 15, Highsmith Art and Intercultural Center, 2015 Fall BA Senior Group Exhibition This group exhibition highlights the very best work from each graduating senior's culminating portfolio.  Both the exhibition and the portfolio are the culmination of each candidate's work toward a Bachelor of Arts degree.

November 23, 2015–January 15, 2016, Second Floor Gallery, Owen Hall, Art/Mechatronics Collaborative Exhibiton.  This exhibition is the result of a semester - long collaboration between Contemporary Sculpture Methods and Computer Science Creative Fabrication courses.  Art students paired with Computer Science students to create designs that were then cast in bronze or aluminum and intergrated with mixed media elements for exhibition.
