Human identity is complex, multifaceted, and intangible. Human beings have both internalized and externalized parts of themselves that are a challenge to represent. Al Slydel’s sculptural body of work, they/them, is a reflection of the artist’s personal struggle with identity formation, specifically gender identity. Coping, healing, and the path to self acceptance are reflected in the tension created by the mixed media used in each piece. they/them opens the conversation about gender nonconformity by illustrating one of infinite non binary/trans experiences, while also providing solidarity and relatable content to those experiencing similar identity struggles. Every queer experience is different, therefore the artist does not claim to represent all queer struggles by any means; they merely seek to offer a glimpse at one experience through via fabric and fibers, wood, resin, paint, ceramic, and Polaroid photographs.
