The high point in Art happenings at UNC Asheville in January has to be Tamie Beldue's (Assistant Professor in Drawing and Lithography) organization of the Fourth Annual Drawing Discourse, which opened in the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery in Owen Hall on January 18 and continues through February 5. (Gallery hours 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m, Monday­­–Friday). Viewer Bob Benites, of campus ITS and art aficionado, said, "the series just gets better and better every year and the bar has been raised yet again."

Juror Susan Hauptman selected 33 pieces for this exhibition after considering more than 1,000 entries submitted by 369 artists. The show-stopper is City Band, a 23.5-foot incredibly detailed drawing by Chris LaPorte. (In 2010, LaPorte received an ArtPrize award of $250,000 for Cavalry, American Soldiers, 1929, another detailed pencil drawing.) Also in the exhibition are some other well-known artists including: Timur (Isaack) Azaev, Therese Bauer, Elisa Berry, Brandon Briggs, Sue Bryan, Dennis Carrie, Antonio Coro, Meghan Flynn, Scott Hunt, Sharon Knettell, Barbara Mehlman, Ed Nadeau, Aaron Pennington, Margaret Reneke, Shaun Roberts, Janveir Rollande, Kay Ruane, Joan Ryan, Pete Schulte, David Schurbutt, Randy Simmons, Brian Simpson, David Stanger, Robert Stickloon, D. Dargan Teska, Cara Walz, Peter J. Warburton, and Jennifer Wroblewski.

Ms. Hauptman gave a well-received artist talk before the opening. It was a real treat for artists and those who appreciate art to listen to someone whom they have admired and followed their work for many years. Discussion continued at the reception; it was enlightening to be able to talk with her about her choices while standing in front of the artwork.
